How you can help the relief efforts in Haiti

On January 12th, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti causing catastrophic damage and loss of life. The American Red Cross is responding to this tragic event with financial assistance, relief supplies, and personnel. Below are some ways which you can help.

DONATIONS

• At this time, what we need the most are financial contributions - whether by check, online or by phone. The American Red Cross and other organizations leading the efforts in Haiti need financial gifts in order to best serve the victims. Things like clothes are not helpful right now because there is nowhere to store them, no one to sort them, and it would be difficult to transport the items to Haiti. One good way to turn clothes into cash is to have a garage sale and then donate the money to the relief efforts.
• People who want to help those affected by the Haitian earthquake can make a donation through your local American Red Cross Stark County Chapter, at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

• The Red Cross is also receiving money through a third party mobile fundraising effort sponsored by Mobile Accord. Mobile donors can text "Haiti" to 90999 to send a ten dollar donation to the Red Cross. The funds will go to support the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. The $10 charge is added to your phone bill.

 VOLUNTEERING
• Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Haiti Relief. At this time, we are only deploying Red Cross volunteers specially trained to manage international emergency operations. Please consider supporting our community by volunteering with the Stark County Chapter where you will be trained in Disaster Relief Courses.

• Please contact your local American Red Cross Stark County Chapter for information on providing assistance. Also listen to your local media outlets for agencies that are deploying volunteers.

SAFE AND WELL INQUIRIES

• If you are concerned about a U.S. citizen living or traveling in another country, you may call the U.S. Department of State at 1-888-407-4747 for assistance. Please be patient as there is a large volume of calls.

• Otherwise, we encourage you to continue to try to reach them via telephone, social networking sites or through a loved one outside the disaster zone. We know that telephone lines are down, so we ask that you remain patient and try again often.

Thank you to all the Stark County organizations that have held fundraisers or are currently having a fundraiser for Red Cross Haiti Relief. more...
 Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Program

The American Red Cross has prepared youth for the responsibilities of babysitting since 1981.

The Babysitter’s Training course provides youths ages 11 to 15 the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for children and infants through hands-on activities, interactive video and discussions.  The 6½ hour program teaches students to keep themselves and the children they care for safe as well as how to handle emergencies including illnesses, injuries and household accidents.

Students learn how to build a babysitting business and how to write resumes and apply for jobs.  The Babysitter’s Training Course includes materials to assist in training and babysitting, including a first aid kit, an emergency reference guide, an electronic babysitting client organizer and an interactive CD-ROM with activities for children.

Red Cross Celebrates Black History Month

Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross proudly joins the nation in celebrating Black History Month.
From the very beginning of the American Red Cross, the organization has supported and received support from African Americans.
The American Red Cross began with the courageous acts of Clara Barton during the Civil War. Barton brought voluntary services and medical supplies to a number of soldiers during the Civil War, sometimes even arriving before military support. There was no segregation in Barton's work; she aided many black soldiers, including members of the all-black Massachusetts 54th Regiment.
After the Civil War, Barton pushed to create a Red Cross within the United States. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass supported Barton's "Appeal to the American People" in 1882, which lobbied for an American Red Cross.
African Americans participated in the efforts of the American Red Cross in both war and peace. Many blacks, including veterans whom Barton had helped in the Civil War, stepped in to help with the American Red Cross's relief efforts for the thousands of people left homeless after the 1893 Sea Islands Hurricane.

While many services and chapters of the American Red Cross were segregated, blacks were highly dedicated and anxious to serve their fellow citizens. In 1942, the American Red Cross met with African American leaders to discuss how blacks could help the Red Cross meet the needs of the nation.
Shortly after, Jesse O. Thomas was recruited to deal with minority issues at headquarters and was named special assistant to the director of Domestic Operations of the American Red Cross. In 1946, Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson, founder of the United Negro College Fund, became the first black member of the American Red Cross Central Committee.
In 1966, William H. Dabney, who served with the American Red Cross in World War II, became the first African American appointed to the League of the Red Cross Societies in Geneva, Switzerland, where he provided newly founded Red Cross Societies in West Africa with financial and technical assistance.
In 1979, the American Red Cross welcomed a number of great leaders to the organization. President Jimmy Carter appointed Dr. Jerome H. Holland as the first African American chairman to the Red Cross. In the same year, the Dr. Charles Orr, a longtime supporter of the American Red Cross and an advocate for equal opportunity for minorities within the Red Cross, joined the American Red Cross Board of Governors.
In 1999, Steve D. Bullock became the first African American chief executive officer in the American Red Cross when he was asked to become acting president.
The American Red Cross has benefited greatly from the assistance of blacks, from volunteers to an acting president. African Americans have made great contributions in not only providing the assistance and care the American Red Cross aims for, but also in breaking down barriers of race.
Red Cross Youth Club Supports Service Men and Women

Local high school students showed support for active service men and women by creating "welcome home bags" and writing letters of encouragement for troops on Saturday, January 16.
The students are members of the Stark County Red Cross Youth Club and this month were assisting in the chapter's service to Armed Forces. The club put together "welcome home bags" for Melissa Seibert, the chapter's manager for Military Outreach, and her team to hand out to returning service men and women as part of the "Welcome Home" program. more...

RED CROSS CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF SAVING LIVES
This month marks a century that the American Red Cross has been helping people save lives through Preparedness and Health and Safety Education Training.
In 1910 the Red Cross began training in first aid, co-sponsoring classes focusing on industrial safety, eventually establishing a traveling first aid program for railroad employees. Today the American Red Cross has expanded and offers training in health and safety services to people of all ages in 686 chapters nationwide.

With the heightened interest in volunteer opportunities through the American Red Cross after the events in Haiti, the Stark County Chapter will now be starting its volunteer training with orientation meetings in place of personal interviews.
Melissa Seibert, Volunteer and Military Services Manager for the chapter, said that becoming a volunteer is simple: attend orientation, go to Fulfilling Our Mission, and proceed in the chosen area of service. more....
