The Volunteer Department offers a wide variety of opportunities through the services profiled throughout the website. Volunteers are also needed to sew with our sewing group, or at home, work as a front desk receptionist, assist with special projects, mailings, blood pressure readings, and specific assignments designed for youth volunteers.
We are excited to announce that the Stark County Regional Chapter has started a Red Cross Youth Club. This service group is open to any Stark County High School student with an interest in creating a difference in their community. Want to learn more?
Transportation
The Chapter is in urgent need of volunteer drivers to transport dialysis clients to treatments Monday through Saturday, day and evening hours. Red Cross vans and insurance provided. Please call Doris.
Sewing Group
You can work from home or come to the office most Friday mornings and make patchwork comforters to be given to fire families.
Receptionist
The front desk is staffed by volunteers who greet clients as they walk in, and direct them to the appropriate department. This position also directs all incomming calls to the appropriate staff member.
Office Work
Volunteers are needed to perform light office duties such as; typing of certificates and envelopes, filing, data entry, preparing the quarterly newsletter for bulk mailing.
Health and Safety
There are various opportunities for volunteering. Most of our classes are taught by volunteers, including those working with youth and HIV prevention. Light office duties, data entry, typing of certificates, filing, and cleaning mankikins are some of the other opportunities available. There are also seasonal positions working at a First Aid or Water Station during the summer months during some of the areas most exciting events.
Rape Crisis Services
You could be an Advocate for a survivor during their time of crisis, or perhaps a community educator talking to groups about such topics as Stranger Danger, Self-Esteem or Date Rape.
Emergency Services
There are many funtions to this department with various levels of skill and training. Office duties, mass care, family services and shelter operations are a few of many things you could become invoved in.
Fund Raising
You can become involved in our annual Duck Race. There are opportunities to sell ducks, help with set up or tear down or work the kids carnival games, face painting or provide blood pressure readings.
Internships
Past interns have included majors such as; Marketing, BA/BS Corporate Communications, Community Health and Emergency Management.
Blood Pressure Readings
It is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. High blood pressure puts you at risk for stroke, coronary disease, and kidney failure. While high blood pressure is the greatest risk factor for heart disease, it is also easily controlled.
A blood pressure reading measure the force of blood as it presses against the walls of your arteries. It is made up of two numbers that measure the heart pumping and the heart resting. The top number (systolic blood pressure) measures the force while your heart pumps. The bottom number (diastolic blood pressure) measures the force at rest, which is in between heart puumps. A normal systolic pressure is below 140, and a healthy diastolic number is below 90.
